How often should I have my vent cleaned?
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), ALL DRYER
MANUFACTURERS, AND THE FEDERAL FIRE AGENCY, recommend residential dryer vents be
cleaned at least once per year. We believe that the following factors could mean more frequent cleanings
should take place:

Is it full size or small stackable dryer?
Is your vent over 5 feet long?
Does your vent have several bends or elbow joints?
Do you have a bird guard covering your exhaust exit?
What exactly is a dryer vent?
A dryer vent is actually the duct work and/or hosing that run from the dryer, through the wall(s), and to the vent hood located on the exterior of the home (usually on a side wall or on the roof).
My clothes take a long time to dry. Could my dryer vent be clogged?

How does the dryer vent function?
The dryer vent is a ventilation system that connects your dryer to the outside of the house. Your dryer blows hot air through your wet clothes to dry them and this hot air blows out of the house through the dryer vent, along with pieces of lint.

If the lint trap is cleaned before each use of the dryer, does the vent still need to be cleaned?
Approximately 70% of the lint is caught in your dryer’s lint trap and the remainder is blown through the dryer and ventilation system. That remainder builds up over time in the duct work so yes, it does need to be cleaned.
Can I clean my dryer vent myself?
We do not recommend cleaning your dryer vent yourself, as simple as it looks and sounds it can become very complicated very quickly. Typically about one hour. The amount of time may vary due to length of vent, amount of build up and unexpected issues such as bird’s nests.
